The title of this book originally was Elinor and Marianne but later was revised to become Sense and Sensibility. ...
In this Essay I would like to describe and compare two main characters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who represent sense and sensibility. Sense in the dictionary is defined as practical intelligence, reasonable thought, something sensible and reasonable. ... The dictionary defines sensibility as capacity for feeling, capacity for being affected emotionally or intellectually. ... ” She heartlessly laughs at the affections of Colonel Brandon, to which Elinor responds that he “is a sensible man, and sense will always have attractions for her. ...
When Elinor hears of Edward’s secret engagement to Lucy, she again shows her rationality and sensibility. ... “Urged by a strong impulse of affectionate sensibility, she moved…to her sister’s chair…and said ‘Dear, dear Einor, don’t mind them. ... Again, Marianne is following her emotions and sensibilities rather that her duties and common sense. ... But as just we see a little sense in Marianne, we also see a little of sensibility in Elinor. ... Elinor’s sense balances Marianne’s sensibility. And while Marianne will always be the sister with the strong sensibilities, and Elinor will always be the sister with the strong sense, they are always will have a little bit of the other sister in themselves.
The discovery I made as a result of reading this book was that sense or sensibility cannot stand alone. You must have an equal balance of both to be happy, because if you have too much sense, as Elinor did, then you will not allow yourself to show too much emotion. So you may be losing the true love of your life because of too much sense. But also if you feel to much sensibility, as Marianne did, then you wont think of anything but acting out your romantic fantasies and may be choosing someone who is not right for you because they fit the description of the man of your dreams and you want to marry them so you dont lose them, but this sometimes happens before you even get to know the true him.
