People came to America looking for freedoms and had lived under their own local rules for many years. The British decided that the colonies were too independent and issued a series of laws to reign them in. The colonists were outraged that they had no representation and a monarch living so far away was dictating their lives. These events fueled the anger, which led to the first shot of the war. In 1776 Nathan Hale was crossing into American lines when the British captured him. The British had figured out his true identity. When they did Lt. Col. Robert Rogers took him to see General William Howe. Nathan Hale openly admitted his true identity and his objectives.
