Price of Growing UP On the loneliness of Huckleberry Finn

Abstract: The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest works written by Mark Twain, whose penetrating insight and dialectical language have caught attentions of many critics. Unlike others, this article will not focus on his writing styles any longer, insteadly, it will center on the loneliness of the little hero in this novel, Huck, a half savage, tender, God-worshipping boy. The analysis will be divided into two main parts to give out the reasons of Hucks loneliness: the objective factors, including family, friend, nature and the human society; the subjective factor, that is Hucks complex psychological characterisics. Actually, loneliness is a common experience of human being, which has been well reflected by many characters in literary works. ... The only difference is that their loneliness is caused by different reasons. Huckleberry Finn is one of them. ... It is a real masterpiece telling a story of growing up. ... In Mark Twain¡¯s novels man¡¯s feeling of loneliness and isolation is a recurrent theme. ... If you are a keen reader of the Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, you may find in many places of the book, there are similar psychological descriptions to the quoted sentences at the very beginning of this article. Every time that Huck escapes from some situation, the theme of loneliness and isolation is often touched upon. Although his shrewdness and intelligence always bring us smile, none of us can help to diminish his loneliness, including himself. People believe that if there are any equality which they were born with, loneliness is one of them. ... There are many objective factors functioning on his life, for instance, the loneliness from family, from friend, from nature and the human society; besides this, Huck¡¯s complex characteristics is the subjective origin of his loneliness. ... The fact he has a father only emphasizes his loneliness. ... The sense of homelessness is the root of his loneliness. ... In chapter xv, when they got separated by the currents, Huck¡¯s loneliness is again emphasized by his saying to himself, ¡°¡­you feel like you are laying dead still on the water; ¡­If you think it ain¡¯t dimal and lonesome out in a fog that way, by yourself, in the night, you try it once----you¡¯ll see.
