John Carpenter made Halloween in 1978, at the time this film was frightening for audiences and unusual for the horror genre due to its approach. Films are made up by actions and events, most films begin with actions and then move on to events, which usually are repercussions of the previous actions, however Halloween opens with an event, and a disturbing one to date. ... Halloween was a new approach to the horror genre; it was impressive for an audience to see a female as the sole survivor.
Scream was made eighteen years after Halloween and coming up with something original was quite difficult for both the script and the direction, and yet the genre had changed so much that the film could be approached from a different angle. Wes Craven made the film frightening, graphic as well as dark, yet he produced a two-hour piece of cinema where the audience could jump in their seats as well as laugh at the clever way he uses the characters to mock the horror genre. This aspect of the film is what put it so far ahead of movies in this genre, it distanced from films such as Halloween and Friday the Thirteenth, in fact many references are made to other films, the humour is understood yet subtle enough not to change the genre of the film.
When Halloween was made it was suggested that it had hidden opinions about certain issues, such as the idea of being murdered for a punishment as opposed to innocent people being brutally murdered.
