It’s the actions and changes of the characters that make up a novel. In Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, he presents a number of characters that act and then change in certain ways. However, some of them appeal to the reader more than others. This is because some possess traits that make them unique. For this reason, Sydney Carton is one of these memorable characters. Dickens places Carton in numerous situations demonstrating the changes he takes on. Overall, Carton is seen as first a pitiful drunkard with little self esteem and aspirations; however, through major events, he developed as hero showing hope. Dickens portrays Sydney Carton as man lacking any leadership or optimism for his future. At the beginning of the novel, Carton doesn’t care about anything. He believed he was wasting his own life, but didn’t act upon any of these thoughts.
