Teen Pregnancy
Introduction:
Every year one million teenage girls become pregnant. Almost half of these pregnant teens will have an abortion, four percent will place their child up for adoption, and about sixty percent will become teen mothers (Silverstein 7). Even though the teen pregnancy rates are decreasing, they are still a growing concern. In today’s society teen pregnancy is viewed in a much different light then it has been in the past. ... The majority of teen pregnancies occurring each year are unwanted and unintentional. When faced with something as important and as confusing as teen pregnancy the grim reality sets in and consequences arise. A teen parent must become more mature, responsible, and realistic very quickly compared to a normal teenager without the responsibility of caring for a child. ... For society to ensure a declining rate in teen pregnancies some simple steps can be taken. Education about contraception, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and sex would be the most important and effective way to minimize the number of teen pregnancies.
Methods Of Contraception
There are many ways for any teen to protect them selves when considering becoming sexually active. The most important factor every teen needs before becoming sexually active is having the knowledge about methods of contraception and the difference in effectiveness that each method provides (Mucciolo 4). ... If a contraceptive method is not used properly than it will not be effective in preventing pregnancy and or sexually transmitted diseases. ... Abstinence is the number one recommended method of birth control, and it’s the only method which is one hundred percent effective in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (Mucciolo 5). ... Also, having sex before or after ovulation can only minimize your chances of pregnancy and it does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted diseases. ... The pill only offers protection from pregnancy, not from any sexually transmitted diseases. ...
Condoms:
Condoms are very effective in preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. ... Condoms are highly recommended since they protect from both pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
If any teen, whether it be male or female, is considering becoming sexually active any method of contraception is greatly recommended. ... One of the most common results of unprotected sex is pregnancy. ... The very first thing that a pregnant teen should do is tell her partner, the father, the situation that they are in. ... However, it is possible for a teen mother to cope on her own. ... One thing that the pregnant teen needs to do is to inform her parents, the grandparents-to-be, of the situation that she is in. the first reactions from the parents of a pregnant teen are disappointment, anger, guilt, and pity (Silverstein 17). Even though the parents of a pregnant teen may be upset in the beginning, their attitudes will quickly change when they realize the seriousness of the situation. ... They are more than willing to do all of the necessary things needed to ensure that their daughter has a healthy pregnancy. After informing the necessary people, the pregnant teen has responsibilities, and commitments she must make to the unborn baby which she is carrying (Silverstein 8). ... Diets are very important during pregnancy since what the mother eats and drinks, the child eats and drinks as well. ... There are many actions which should be taken during a pregnancy to make sure that a healthy child is born, but there are also actions which should be taken to ensure a happy family for the child to grow and live in.
