Two main characters in the novel Gentlehands, Buddy Boyle, and Skye Pennington developed a strong bond between each other. However, the conflicting backgrounds between their two families create tension and tear away at that bond. On the Boyle side, with a more “average” status, emotions are very negative toward most people like the Penningtons viewing them as “ not in the same class”(Kerr 7). The Pennington family is extremely lucrative. This contributes to the personality and image of not caring towards the beginning of the novel. But later on Buddy’s grandfather makes the conflict mutual with the Boyles. Buddy’s family originated from Germany, his mother was born there moving to America later on.
