Odysseus was brave, strong, and cunning, but without determination he would not have succeeded in returning home. During the 10 years he spent fighting in Troy and the 10 years he spent journeying back to his homeland, Odysseus never stopped trying to reunite with his family. Throughout the novel, wherever he found himself and whatever adventure he had, Odysseus was tenacious in his goal of getting home. ... After Athena revealed herself, she assured Odysseus that he was in Ithaca and helped him devise a complex plan to get back his family and his house. Odysseus’ determination is demonstrated by the way that he carried out his plan. ...

For his plan to succeed, Odysseus had to act like a beggar for a long time.
