Cell Structure Lab Purpose: To study some typical plant and animal cells, to identify the structures they possess, and to determine the functions of all the basic plant and animal cells structure. Procedure: Refer to ¡§cell structure lab¡¨ handout. Discussion: 1.) Part I: a.) cell membrane- A thin, felxible layer that surrounds the cytoplasm. It protects the cell from the outer environment. It has a phospholipid bilayer (two layers) which is made up of various cholestrol, phospholipids, glygolipids and proteins. Since the membrane is a fluid, it is semi-permeable. Which means some things can pass in and out of the membrane through osmosis or diffusion. The phospholipids have a hydrophobic (non-polar) head and a hydrophilic (polar) tail. Hydrophilic areas of a phospholipid are 'attracted' to water, and hydrophobic regions are repelled by water, this is how the membrane the amount of water it lets in and out. b.) Cell wall- a rigid four-layered structure that is found outside the cell membrane, that protects and maintains the shape of the cell. It is usually found in plant cells and certain algae, bacteria and fungi cells but not in animal cells. The cell wall is composed of four layers. N.b. There is always a film of moisture* on the outside of an actively growing living cell. The cell membrane (plasma membrane) is a very thin, flexible and rather elastic layer around the outside of the cell. It is made of fats and proteins. It is said to be selectively permeable* as it holds in the cell contents, as well as allowing useful substances to pass into and waste substances out of the cell.
