“The course of true love never did run smooth.” Were there ever truer words spoken? It’s surely the best quote to describe predicament facing a young lady by the name of Hermia. She is in love with a man named Lysander, but her father, Egeus wishes for her to wed a young man named Demetrius. Full of vexation, Egeus brings this matter to the court before the Duke Theseus. According to the law of Athens, Egeus as Hermia’s father has the right to dispose of her as he pleases—into the arms of the man he wants her to marry; Demetrius, or to her death.
