Railroads, technology, and industries; these are just a few of the reasons why America grew in population. American railroads grew with time. The railroads shot up in popular areas where money could be made. Transcontinental routes were needed in many areas. This called for more land grants. The west and east competed for the railroad lines. In the late nineteenth century the public welcomed many new inventions. Some of these inventions were: bicycles, the typewriter, the elevator, the telephone and linoleum (482). The new advances in technology changed the era of the nineteenth century more than any other advance, because without the change of the technology we could not have what was to come of the nineteenth century. Electric streetcars changed the character of urban life and moved people into the suburbs (482). The transistion from local shops and factories to giant national corporations severely changed the work and spare time of the American people (493).
