In the short story of Eveline by James Joyce (part of the book Dubliners), the main character Eveline is forced to think hard and make a very important decision. At the age of nineteen, Eveline was on the verge of eloping with a sailor and leaving her whole family behind, when she decided to abandon her lover and stay home. ... However, despite all of this, it is my strong belief that Eveline’s thought and decision in the story represent an intelligent, responsible and understanding woman.
The main point in the belief that Eveline was intelligent and responsible is that she completely denied the instant gratification of leaving her family behind and starting a new life, and instead, decided to stay and hold her family together. This is important because superficially, eloping has many benefits, while staying at home would bring labor and hardships for Eveline. ... 33)
This quote is very important because it shows that Eveline has much responsibility and security in herself.
