The Salem Witch Trials took place during the 17th century, during the Colonial times where life in New England revolved around the Church. Salem was divided into two parts: Salem Town and Salem Village. They were divided by economic and social conditions. Most people in Massachusetts were Puritans (colonists who had left England seeking religious tolerance), but ironically their ethics and lifestyle were far from tolerant. For example, people were not allowed to express any kind of emotion or opinion including anger, excitement, fear, etc and it was against the law to not attend Church.
