In the former narrative, it forms the basis of the plot itself – the whole novel deals with the titular Colonel’s struggle for survival, all in the vain hope that one day, his veterans’ pension would arrive by mail. In Sailor, its role is less evident, but no less important for that; as a sailor, Ryuji is no stranger to the brevity of life, and he, in effect, gambles with his life every day when he is at sea.
