Sammy is a cashier at a supermarket called “A & P”. Throughout the story, Sammy explains the scene of that day he quit his job. He explains that the story takes place in a “town is five miles from a beach”, which is very important to fully understand the story. In the story’s Exposition, Sammy describes the scene of the 3 girls entering the store, “In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits” (397). This first sentence is a very simple sentence, but has a very dramatic effect on this exciting short story. The girls play a major role in the outcome of this short story. A Lyrical Controversy A “gangsta” rapper parades around with his many women, gold teeth, and souped up cars. A tattoo-clad rocker drinks a beer in a room full of empties, as he sings in not-so-subtle ways about his hopeless addiction to drugs. These images and many others are put forth every day in numerous popular rap and rock songs that hit the airwaves with regularity.
