     When you think about wakes, funerals, Shiva, and other mourning rituals, you don’t normally think of the social and entertaining etiquette involved. ... If we’re mourning the death of someone, it’s hardly time to think about entertaining in a fun sense. But these mourning rituals are family and community events, nonetheless, and though we often don’t stop to think about it, there are certain rules of etiquette that apply and are expected. Most people will one day be responsible for handling the organizational aspects of one of these rituals, or will be attending the mourning gathering for someone of a different religion, and need to know the basic guidelines of what you can expect and should do in these situations. In this paper I will summarize the cultural traditions and rituals involved in five different funerals: Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu. ... Although in the past it has been customary to wear formal black clothing to Christian funerals as a sign of respect, many people are now choosing to wear bright clothes as a sign of celebration of the new life and resurrection into heaven of the deceased ( memorial pages). ... After the graveside service, there is usually a gathering where a meal is provided to allow family and friends an opportunity to share memories of the deceased, help the family deal with their mourning, and provide hospitality for those who may have traveled a distance to attend the funeral.
