...e as a useful construct today. The sign gantry which will be examined in this investigation is based a similar model to gantry cranes used on construction sites. In each sign gantry structure several forces are involved when hoisting a load. Whilst lifting a load the crane is in Equilibrium, which is a state of a body when the system of forces are balanced. A type of loading condition called tension tends to produce stretching in the material of a component. Compression also a type of loading condition tends to shorten a component by pressing together the particles of its material (Ivanoff Val, 2000). The Sign Gantry sketches (See overleaf) have been designed in accordance to the investigation criteria and consideration has been taken into account for each area to be tested.
