This method was quite effective and helped to prevent petty theft (not very serious crimes) which made up most of all recorded crime. Violent crimes made up a very small percentage of the total statistics and murder was fairly rare. Towards the end of the 19th century the police in London had made more effort into investigating crime as well as preventing it. They did it because criminals had the idea that if they didn’t get caught while committing the crime, they won’t get caught at all. We can see evidence of this by the fact that more detectives were hired, and the CID (criminal investigation department) was formed.
