I am convinced that the main point and objective of the novel is being misinterpreted. The point of the novel is to not only give a little history of the United States, but also to show the incredible spirit of the American people, even when they are in times of a disaster. Some critics argue that the novel is irreligious and vulgar. This conviction is proven erroneous by the inclusion of Jim Casey. Jim Casey was a man of religion at one time. However, he decided to take some time off and ponder about the meaning of life. In the end it was worth it because he was successful in passing his message of the universal family to many of the other characters, the most prominent being Tom Joad. In response to novel coming across as vulgar, the words and actions of the people were influenced by their situation. These people had their whole lives, their land and their belongings, torn away from them. They were forced to start from scratch with nothing.
