...uable citizens, I think that whites really would began to acknowledge them as equal. If this vision was to be carried out I’m assured that it would not only lead to equal rights, but a higher level of mutual respect between blacks and whites. This being one of Washington’s main visions, it alone has convinced me that he would be the visionary who would have the most positive impact on both the lives of black and whites alike. His many ideas to create equality between whites and blacks are also ones that would surely improve the lives of blacks. He urged blacks to put aside immediate demand for their rights. Not only would this assist blacks but also white Americans viewed his plan as the key to racial peace. Equal rights were sure to come eventually, but with all the turmoil that the immediate demands were creating I see this persistence as causing more harm than good. Washington sincerely believed that if put into practice, his vision would have improved the lives of blacks while continuing to be accepted by whites. To see someone genuinely believe in a cause is enough to motivate even skeptics to take it into serious consideration. Or at the very least, in my case to see someone stand behind their cause, doing everything they can to make it succeed not just for themselves or one group of people but for the good of people, in this instance both white and black, is more than enough to make me want to stand with them.
