This goes right along with people going out in person to get a better look at reality by seeing things in person from a distance. Since the things they see are not the things that fit into the reality presented by the media, people are unsure what to believe. When the prisoner is dragged out of the cave into the blinding sun, nothing is clear. After is eyes adjust, he sees a reflection of a horse in the water of the lake. It is wavy like the shadows in the cave, but more colorful. It is familiar (wavy) yet alien (color). This is the same as a person seeing something close up in person. Things would look somewhat like what the media shows, but one could look around and be able to get a more real picture of what was going on. Once the prisoner looked up he would be able to see the solid and colorful horse. He could touch it, smell it and hear the noises it makes. This is comparable to someone being right into the ...
