...rst short story, “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing, an eleven-year-old boy, Jerry, is caught in the difficulty of not being a child or an adult. Over his winter holiday, he and his mother go to a foreign country for a vacation. As Jerry and his mother go to the beach every day, Jerry makes an encounter with older boys. When the boys disappear after going under water, Jerry feels as if the boys are rejecting him. Later Jerry finds out that the boys have been swimming through a secret passageway. Jerry finally finds the passageway and tries to swim through it which means stay under the water for a long time.
