...smart and clever were considered dangerous. If Medea had been a man, she would have had as much trouble. Medea is also a victim by being a foreigner. She is not from Thebes, she is originally from Colchis, and Medea is not very close to anyone in the town. This turns out to be very bad for her. Creon does not know her well, and because of this he is afraid of what she may do. He is worried that Medea may kill his daughter because Jason is now with her. If Creon had know Medea for a longer time, perhaps he would have made an exception for her. However, he does not know her, and as a result, Creon banishes Medea. He says, “I tell you, I prefer to earn your hatred now than to be soft-hearted and afterward regret it.” Creon doesn’t want to take a chance of not doing anything to Medea, and then have her do something to make him regret not getting rid of her. The fact that Creon does not know her very well is not the only way in which Medea suffers as a foreigner. When Creon banishes her, Medea has no one to stick up for her. She has no friends. There is nobody to help her. Medea does not know anyone very well herself, because she is not originally from this place. If she had someone there to help and stick up for her, things could have turned out better for everyone involved.
