The Indians laugh with Mark because they feel comfortable with him and treat him like he is one of them. There is a joyful feeling among the Indians because Mark is a trusted friend. Further, Mark's vicarage is in dire straits when he arrives at the village but he wants to earn the respect of the Indians by being one of them. Mark works hard at repairing the vicarage alone and tries to earn the respect of the Indians. After the funeral of a honored mother, Mark is approached by Chief Eddy who says to him: "Mark, the men have asked me to tell you that when you are ready to build a new vicarage, they will help you." (Craven, 87). Without asking, the Indians have offered of their own free will to help Mark build a new vicarage. Mark has earned the respect of the Indians and in earning this respect, they want to help him in building his new home. Trusted friends show respect to each other and the Indians consider Mark a trusted friend. Furthermore, Mark slowly but surely shows that he values the Indians and is kind and considerate to their feelings and way of life.
