Dee on the other hand is prettier, and much more confidant woman that never hesitates to speak her mind as compared to her sister. “Hesitation was no part of her nature” (Walker 384). Even their mother acknowledges Dee’s superiority to Maggie. She goes on how Maggie resembles a lame dog that was run over and receives pity. This is a stark contrast from Dee. Then their mother gives us a description of Dee’s elegance, beauty, and intelligence. She is “lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure” (Walker 384). To show us just how much confidence Dee had, the mother tells us how at sixteen, Dee already had a style of her own, and knew what style was. The reader comes off thinking of Dee as precocious even at a young age. Dee is not without her faults. Too much confidence can be viewed as being egotistical. Dee’s overconfident mannerisms create a level of ambivalence towards her mother and the reader. One can even infer that Dee had her run ins with disobedience towards her mother. The mother makes two references that would lead us to believe this. Dee would read to her mother a great deal, just to shove her away as her mother began to comprehend.
