... systems, such as Microsoft’s Media Player and Apple’s QuickTime. There are many special features of OS 9. The feature advertised the most is Sherlock 2. This feature of OS 9 provides users with arguably the best and most powerful search engine. It allows you to shop, search for files on your computer, and search the internet for your needs. Another of the features of this operating system is the ability to have multiple users on the same computer. Each user’s preferences are stored securely for privacy and convenience. This makes sharing the Mac easy and worry free. Another main feature of OS 9 is the inclusion of Voiceprint Password. This feature allows you to log onto your computer using your voice. This makes your files extra secure since no two people have the same voice. The keychain, auto updating, encryption, file sharing over the internet, AppleScript over TCP/IP, and the network browser are the other features of OS 9. The key chain feature allows you to store your passwords to things such as internet sites in one spot. The passwords are unlocked by your voice or a typed password. The auto updating feature will allow you to keep your Mac updated. OS 9 can download the updates for your computer off of the internet and install them automatically. The encryption feature allows users to send files over the internet without fear of them being tampered with. The encryption used is industrial strength to make sure files sent stay private. OS 9’s file sharing over the internet feature allows users to share files, folders and data with anyone. The AppleScript over TCP/IP feature allows users to automate tasks on the Mac. The user can be anywhere and still have control of their Mac. And finally, the network browser feature that comes with OS 9 lets you find Internet file servers, FTP servers and web servers easily. It provides a stable, consistent way for applications to deal with the hardware without having to know all the details of the hardware. Mac OS 9 is no different as it does both of these things. The Mac OS 9 operating system is what is called a single-user, multi-tasking operating system. This means that a single-user can have several programs in operation at the same time, in contrast to a single-user, single-task operating system in which one user can do one thing at a time, or real-time operating systems, which are used to control machinery, scientific instruments and industrial systems. A real-time operating system typically has very little user-interface capability, and no end-user utilities. The user interface for the OS 9 is only second to Microsoft in usage. When you first start up Mac OS 9 you are confronted with a “Welcome to Mac OS” screen. After it has finished loading, you see the desktop. On the default desktop there are...
