By 1955 Manson is out of jail and marries his first wife Rosalie Willis and they have a child, Charles Manson Jr. In the next few years Manson continues to have trouble with law and ends up in jail for 10 years over a check forgery. The reason his sentence was so long was because this crime was committed during his probation. His wife divorces him and is granted custody of their child. In 1960 Manson marries his second wife, a young 19-year-old girl with whom he fathers a second child – Charles Luther Manson. Naturally, Manson is again divorced. After serving much time in jail Manson is released, but asks if he can remain in jail as he has developed a home there. Manson is released nonetheless and heads to San Francisco, where he establishes his Manson "family". The Manson "family" was a group of followers Manson had adapted who shared and admired Manson's viewpoints. Patricia Krenwinkel, Susan Atkins, Tex Watson, Lesley Van Houten, lunette "Squeaky" Fromme, and Linda Kasabian were part of this family and the vicious murders that were committed. In the early hours of August 9th, 1969 the family, discluding Manson invaded the Tate residence with the motive of murder. Manson had apparently directed his "family" members to do so and since they were so manipulated by the drugs he fed them, they did as told. At the Tate residence actress Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent were murdered. In total 102 stab wounds were inflicted on the victims and words such as "rise" and "helter skelter" were found written on the wall. Actress Sharon Tate was also 8 months pregnant at the time. Housekeeper Winifred Chapman discovered the dead bodies the next morning. In the evening of that same day the Manson family strikes again. This time Manson directs them to the Labianca's residence, where Mr. Leno Labianca and his wife Rosemary were slain and found with lamp cords fastened around their necks. After the gruesome murders, the Manson family ironically is arrested for other charges that are not connected to the Tate and Labianca murders whatsoever and spend some time in jail.
