By the end of part one, Scout has been firmly established by Harper lee as a narrator of the story. What impressions has she made on you?

...at school. As I read along Scout is taught at home by her father and Calpurnia the values of life she will benefit with later on in life. At her age she knows how to read and write. I feel that Scout is highly intelligent for her age because an average six year old does not have the skills that she does. She is also the only one that knows what they really should not be doing. She states the fact all the time but is ignored by the boys and told ‘Scout I am telling you for the last time shut you trap or go home, I declare to the lord you are getting more like a girl every day.’ This was when they were going into the Radley place and scout didn’t agree to the idea but as usual the boys would not listen and went ahead with it so she had no other choice, she couldn’t leave her brother and dill that would just prove to them she was a girl. I noticed that during the story scout is quick to judge people. She has opinions on most people and is not afraid to share them. When she was at school everyone was talking about how great there dads were no-one was amused when scout told them her father was a lawyer and wasn’t good at anything. This led scout to believe Atticus was an embarrassment and when she found out that he was once ‘Atticus One-Shot Finch’ she soon changed her opinions and realised that she loved him and he was a great father no matter what he can or cant do. She thinks the world of Dill her ‘future husband’. Deep down she also has a lot of respect for Jem even do they have petty arguments Scout tries her best to be ‘one of the lads’ and Jem will always look after his little sister or in most cases scout will look after Jem. When she was with Francis she made it clear she did not like him. I thought a big part in the novel towards Scout was the advice from Atticus ‘ If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along better with all kinds of folks.
