The use of a timer helps so that students understand this is a moment to quickly collect their thoughts about the story using a “doodle” technique. In addition, instruction to use pencils may help so that the emphasis is on collecting thoughts rather than on artistic competence. After sketching, students share and explain their drawing in small groups focusing on what they drew, why they drew it and what they attempted to represent. After sharing within groups, each group can select a sketch to share with the whole group or focus on a unifying theme that was present in all their sketches. This strategy is helpful in assisting all to be contributors to the discussion. Sketch to stretch provides us with ample variations to check understandings and comprehension with our students. The following is one use of the strategy Sketch to Stretch. As mentioned earlier this strategy can be adapted for any grade level. It can also be adapted within the same grade level depending on the book you choose and what you ask of your students.
