Huck Finn

...luck wouldn’t come upon him. Huck is very naïve being that he’s very inexperienced with life and is not in understanding with what goes on in the “real” world. More so, Huck doesn’t necessarily follow the ways of society, which would be portrayed as the type of guy to do what he wants when he wants, and doesn’t care what other people think. This is seen, knowing that Huck is either living in the woods or on the raft with Jim. There were a few times when Huck tried to compromise with society, but it only made him confused and frustrated, since he’s so naïve. For example in the end of Chapter 18, after escaping from the Gragerford's home at the end of the fight over the feud, Huck gets back to where he is happiest on the raft and says to Jim, "...there weren't no home like a raft, after all. Other places seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft". In this sense Huck is the opposite of Tom the way he wants to fit into society. Being the realist that he is, Huck at the beginning of the novel doesn’t have much of an imagination. It’s almost like Tom is his imaginative side. Unlike Tom, Huck goes for simple things that help him and come easiest when planning for the future. This is most seen at the end of the book when Tom and Huck are thinking of plans to set Jim free. Huck’s idea was to use shovels instead of case knives, which in this case would be much harder to use. Although heard about more so than seen, Tom Sawyer, Huck’s ideal, is far different from Huck. Tom’s character is expressed as wanting to be much like society. Another characteristic of Tom is that he is known to be the rebel of the relationship between Huck and Tom.
