Real Women Have Curves

...fatty” or “gordita.” Ana noticed that Carmen was a very hypocrite woman in many aspects of her life, the fat issue being the main one. She could point out to her fellow coworkers that the reason their husbands where not buying them new outfits was because “the fabric got too expensive.” Meaning they got too fat for their husbands to even try to buy new clothes for them. Yet, when she tried to chase after Ana, she lost her breath and could not continue any farther because of the fact that she herself was too overweight. This was finally said the day Ana made all the women in the factory come to terms with their bodies. It was a hot, humid day and all were sweating. Ana described the inferno as hell and took off her shirt. Her mother was beyond herself. She told Ana to put her shirt back on, and asked why she wasn’t ashamed of her body. Before that, Ana had told her mother part of her wanted to lose weight, but part of her wanted to keep it to show her mother that thinness was not everything. When she took her shirt off in front of her mother, it proved that she had come to terms with her body, and was proud of how she looked. The next person to take of an item of clothing was Rosali (Lourdes Perez), which where her pants to show her cellulite. Compared to the others in the factory, however, Rosali was thin. So when she described herself as a “cow” Ana couldn’t help and respond with “if you are a cow, then I must be a hippo.” Her sister, Estela (Ingrid Oliu) who was the owner of the factory where they all worked, then took of her shirt and described herself as “an elephant” compared to the other two. The last to come to take her clothing off was Pancha (Soledad St. Hilaire) who described herself as “an orca”. They then continued to bring their flaws out into the open, and were proud of it. By this time, Carmen was way beyond herself and walked out. This didn’t affect the women; they in fact started to dance in underwear and could care less about their imperfections. Not only her weight played part of Ana’s and Carmen’s relationship. It was one of the main, the other being the fact that Ana was female. Carmen’s sole purpose was to make her daughter thin, work her, and then marry her out. Since she was female she was not suited for anything else. The very beginning of the movie, Carmen is faking sick so that her youngest daughter can stay home and “cook breakfast for the men.” Being the last day of her high school, Ana disobeys. She is then seen quitting her job at a burger place and coming home happy because her school and her job are behind her. Yet her mother, instead of giving her congratulation remarks, she scolds Ana for quitting, and immediately commands her to work at her sisters factory. Her reason being the fact that Ana is now 18 and has not had a real job, when she herself was forced to work since the age of 13. When Carmen was gossiping with Rosali and Pancha about Norma (Lina Acosta) and the reason she was left at the altar, which was she had sex with her fiancé the night before her wedding, Ana gave her input. Her mother had said something about how that’s how females now get pregnant, and Ana commented that it was because females today didn’t know how to use contraceptives correctly. Her mother, shocked, told Ana that the fact that she knew too much would not please her man, because men wanted virgins. Ana asked why was the females virginity the only thing that mattered to the male sex, and not...
