...g built. The winner would receive a new home. Calliope thought how much she would like to win that prize. She would be able to have a small room in the new house just for herself. She studied the banner and saw she had only two days left to think up a name. Calliope had an idea. After finishing at the fruit stand she went home to work on it. Calliope knew that Hestia was the Greek goddess of the home, domestic joy and the eternal flame. Calliope prayed to Hestia to help her think up a name for the fire pit. Calliope wanted to forever honor Hestia with this name. She set up an altar and offered a sacrifice of fruit to Hestia. Hestia was the kindest and most caring of all of the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. She heard Calliope's prayers and decided to help the young girl. Hestia was going to assist Calliope in coming up with the name for the new fire pit. Hestia would help Calliope that evening when Calliope was cooking dinner with her mother. That evening Calliope and her mother were tending the fire in preparation for the evening meal. An ember jumped out of the fire and landed on the stones at the front of the fire pit, just at Calliope's feet. Calliope noticed the ember was heart shaped. She remembered that Hestia believed that the fire was at the center of the earth, just like the heart is the center of the human. Calliope yelled with joy. " We should name the fire pit the hearth. It is the heart of the home and earth. This ember symbolizes the light that burns in each of our hearts. It is the fire that must be tended constantly and never left to burn out."
