Both women were fairly old and somewhat incapable of raising a rebellious boy like Huck. Nevertheless, they attempted to make Huck into what they believed would be a better boy. Specifically, they attempted to civilize him. This process included making Huck go to school, teaching him various religious facts, and making him act in a way that the women found socially acceptable. Huck never had to follow many rules in his life and found the demands the women placed on him constraining and the life with them lonely. As a result, soon after he first moved in with them, he ran away. Even though he became somewhat comfortable with his new life , Huck never really enjoyed the life of manners, religion, and education that the Widow and her sister imposed upon him. Huck believed he would have found some freedom with Tom Sawyer. Tom was Huck's age and promised Huck and other boys of the town a life of adventure. Huck was eager to hang out with Tom because it would allow him to escape the somewhat boring life he led with the Widow Douglas. Unfortunately, such an escape did not occur. Tom Sawyer’s adventures were not real at all and Huck found out too late that Tom was full of empty promises. Huck thought Tom’s life would be fun. So he wanted to do everything that Tom did. After a few unfortunate events Huck found his own adventure and realized he didn’t need Tom to lead an eventful life. Pap was truly an influential figure in Huck’s life. Huck's father pap tried to undo all of the civilizing effects that the Widow and Miss Watson had attempted to instill in Huck.
