Modified Car Laws
...e and more money involved. People spend well into the mid 40,000 to 50,000 dollar range on just modifications alone (Concepcion 126). Turbochargers, superchargers, cold air intakes, big rims and tires, nitrous oxide, body kits, interior and exterior work , audio systems and many other things. For some people doing things to there car is like a second job for them . It takes a lot of attention to your car to make it look good, and a lot of hours spent on maintaining it . To me making my car go faster and look better is almost my top priority during the summer months, its just a good feeling knowing your car looks good and performs well. The downfall to all this is , most of the things people add to there car are not street legal. The most targeted modification I have seen been strictly enforced is the exhaust. Almost every import car or sport compact car I have seen in this area , and mostly JCC has a modified exhaust or a “Rice Pipe”. I have a modified exhaust. The problem cops have with this alteration is the noise it produces. Some cars can make a annoying high pitched sound and some cars its just sickening to hear it. I have been pulled over more than 5 times just for my exhaust alone , but luckily my exhaust has been deemed DOT approved by New York State , so I don’t have to pay the fines when I get the ticket and have to go to court. it’s a hassle being watched or marked by police as a nuisance just because I love to put money into my car and make it look and perform better than stock. For some people it is a way of life, its there social well being . In California they have nearly the second highest enforcing laws against modifying a car. ( True Life) If u have anything done to the engine of the car u have to show a sticker of the products maker on the exterior of the car. You have you have your headlights 38 inches of the ground or else you get a ticket and the headlights cat be any higher than 5 feet high or you get a ticket for having to high of a car ( True Life). It is no fun not being able to do what you want to a piece or property you own and then get penalized for it cause some sort of authority does not like how it is. There has been many ways of getting out of a ticket, if received for illegal modification of a car. In New York State its illegal to drive without a front license plate (Mooney). Many people with body kits on there car have there license plate affixed in a different spot than intended to on a stock vehicle. If u have the plate in the front window its still illegal.
