Greco-Roman what?
...races, throwing of the diskos and javelin, and boxing all still have a precedent and a profession in our society today. Modern athletes all get paid extremely well. Athletes are represented world-wide. Wrestlers are barely televised in the Olympic Games. How could a sport with more or as much tradition as any other sport be disrespected so harsh? People can’t even recognize the greats that match any individual or coaches record in professional sports. Some of the names mentioned deserve credit for endless credentials, and yet they barley break the news. Cael Sanderson has created a record that is almost unbeatable on any level. Yet, people respond with a “huh?” when asked who this is. When one speaks of records, you think of the greatest. Asking the same question of who will ever break this record. All assume that this absurd and unstoppable feat is never going to be broken. But it does. The only record that will by no means be broken is perfection. Perfection is the quality of something that is as good or suitable as it can possibly be. It’s a goal that one strives for, a process of becoming or making something perfect. It’s a standard that is set and can never be raised. Ask yourself what could be so perfect? Well, a zero has to be somewhere in that equation. You can’t get better then zero. There is no such thing as a negative in the loss column. Cael Sanderson had a perfect season of 159-0 throughout his entire college career. (teamsanderson) This has never been done, and it can never be broken, as no one can beat undefeated. Yet, Cael is the first wrestler to reach the Wheaties box. This record finally broke through for the wrestling world into exposure. But, it shouldn’t take so many credentials to achieve this sort of fame. There are many more who should be recognized and see the benefits of so many average professionals in the modern sports today. Another great who came up one match short of Cael’s record was a name that speaks volumes to anyone in the wrestling world, Dan Gable. Gable compiled an unbelievable record of 182-1. He was undefeated in 64 prep matches and 118-1 at Iowa State. He won his first 117 college matches, and NCAA record, before suffering his only defeat in the NCAA finals his senior year. Gable was a three-time all-American, three-time Big Eight champion and two-time national champion. Gable served as the University of Iowa's head wrestling coach for 21 years. As Iowa's all-time winningest coach, Gable compiled a career record of 355-21-2, all at Iowa. He coached 152 all-Americans, 45 national champions, 106 Big Ten champions and 10 Olympians, including four gold medalists. Gable was named to the U.S.A. Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980 and to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1985. (dangable) Gable matches up against any coach in college and pros. He even tops legends such as Joe Paterno who has only a record of a 336-100-3 mark in 37 seasons as head coach. Gable as was only the head coach for the Hawkeye’s for 21 years! Look at a professional great for the Chicago Bulls, Phil Jackson, who led the Chicago Bulls the 6 NBA championships. (wikipedia) Now, compare this to Gable. Gable led his Hawkeyes to almost double the amount of titles of Jackson. He should be known world-wide. There is no respect towards wrestling present day. Supporters and wrestlers themselves are getting fed up with no recognition. A group of people, all x-wrestlers and lead by Toby Willis and Kenny Johnson, are finally getting together and creating a prototype television show called Real Pro Wrestling. “Our vision is to reestablish real wrestling as a major professional sport in America. We believe that true professional wrestling can again thrive like it did in the 1920s when it brought thousands of fans to Madison Square Garden and other major venues to see America’s finest wrestlers.”(Realprowrestling) RPW marketer Kenny Johnson, who wrestled in the O...
