The history of the Irish dance is almost as important as the dance itself. Irish Dancing began with the Celtic people, which was about the 6th or 7th century. They used the style of dance as type of story telling and to praise their religious believes. Hundreds of years passed with the Irish culture being oppressed. The Celtic tradition in Ireland had declined and was basically was extinct in the 12th century. The Irish dance was not used for the story telling anymore, but as a form of comedy. This continued until the late 18 century when the Gaelic League was founded. This brought a new found pride to the art form of Irish dance. Irish dance evolved in many ways during the 20th Century. Instruction was taken place at a younger age. Who is instructed has also changed from mostly males to mostly females. While the meaning of Irish dance has changed the pride that accompany the dancers have not. Today Irish dance has become an important part to the cultural life of Irish Americans. It is has also become a regular part of Irish social culture. As an Irish American I have always been amazed by the people who perform these dances. The amount of training it must take to have every step choreographed has to be enormous. To dance and move around without any help from your arms has always puzzled me.
