Votergasm, a group that wants college students to “withhold sex from nonvoters for a week after the election (“Citizen” level), or have sex with a voter (“Patriot” status),” is making headlines. Yet, despite its linking politics with sex, Votergasm is not that far-fetched of an idea. For almost 20 years now, Rock the Vote of MTV has tried to make politics cool. Now, the moment has finally come; hipsters of New York hang all sorts of Kerry memorabilia in windows and on book bags. There is Biking Against Bush, Bowling Against Bush, and Karaoke for Kerry. The groups all have the same goal in mind: they want to get rid of Bush. But if that fails, at least they can say they partied. To the creators and the supporters of Votergasm, the goal to “get young people to vote and have sex” seems like a logical combination. I suppose it would, to a group of sex-obsessed adolescents. Make no mistake about it, Votergasm, is merely a disguised technique attempting to make casual sex sound somewhat highbrow. President Michelle Collins defined the experience as “When you go out vote and have hot sex with a young voter, culminating and completing that cycle, you have completed a votergasm.” So, essentially, the organization is offering the youth sex for their votes. Does this sound like a new form of prostitution to anyone else? What else could it possibly mean? Aren’t the people of Votergasm selling college students sex for votes? Did Ms. Collins not consider the consequences of mindless youth fornicating willy-nilly? I hope she did, but nowhere does Votergasm’s slogan contain even a few words reminding followers to practice safe sex. Not to mention, the risk of two random obligin...
