She gives detail that would make one assume she is in a coffin such as “I heard them life a box and creek across my soul.”(pg 1932) These descriptive words give off a claustrophobic feeling to the funeral onto its readers, sending chills down ones arms. Due to the fact that she states the funeral is in her brain you can now conclude that she is suggesting a premature burial. The poem seems to be about a person who is slowly having a loss of consciousness, and as the poem moves on you can see a downward movement of the life of the person in the coffin. As you read along this poem it appears like the person being buried is having thoughts that only a conscious person could perceive. She uses details that explain things no reader could ever feel such as “my mind was going numb” and “the creak across her soul.” The speaker’s finely tuned sense of sound such as the treading, beating, and the creaking, along with the speaker’s sharp sense of enclosure both combine to suggest that the mourners are performing a funeral service for a speaker who is not yet dead. To me this poem is about a person who maybe is having thoughts about death and the end of life. She uses feelings, thoughts, and emotions that someone being buried alive might feel.
