After burial is complete, the men set out on the river hoping to get home and forget the whole event ever took place. Unbeknownst to them, the mayhem is far from over. The rapids of the river are strong and the men have to battle to stay afloat. Drew, who was the most opposed to burying the mountain man, and is disgusted with himself, slumps over in the front of the canoe and appears to have lost consciousness. He falls overboard and drifts away into the rapids of the river. As a result Ed loses control of the canoe and it shatters into two pieces. Soon the other canoe is capsized and all four of the men are in the rapids and headed for a waterfall. Now it is each man for himself; an excellent example of man versus nature. Once over the rapids, the men reconvene. Bobby and Ed survive virtually unscathed, Lewis, however, is severely wounded with a bad fracture in his leg. The significance of this event is that now Lewis has to step down as the dominant leader position. Lewis informs the others that Drew was shot most likely by the escaped mountain man. Lewis has done all he can do for the men. Ed must now take the reins and...
