....”(Pg 959-960) The staff of the man he meets in the forest gives the young man a bad feeling saying that they are serpents. From what is said one would think that the staff and his people are the devil. Soon after leaving they stop when the young man says he has gone far enough exclaiming “Too Far! Too Far!” (Pg960)If you can see things the way I did when reading this story, after going into the forest with the supposed devils, he has looked fear and death in the face and has had enough and now wants to turn back. I believe this is apparent by the young mans saying “My father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him. We have been a race of honest men and good Christians since the days of the martyrs; and shall I be the first of the name of Brown that ever took this path and kept --.” (Pg 960) What the young says next is very interesting, he says “I have been as well acquainted with your family as with ever a one among the Puritans; and that’s no trifle to say. I helped your grandfather, the constable, when he lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem; and it was I that brought your father a pitchpine knot, kindled at my own hearth, to set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip’s war.” What the young man is actually saying is that on many occasions he has helped the devil, as long as his beliefs stay consistent he will be helping t...
