...urces Management, Management and Enterprise Development, or Marketing Management. Please note that some majors have specific entrance requirements. NAIT, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology The Bachelor of Applied Business – Finance is a two-year post diploma degree. Each semester is four months long for a total of eight semesters. During semester five the student will take four general academic courses and two electives. Semester six consists of five general academic courses, while semesters seven and eight are distance education courses and field study courses. These last two semesters, the student works directly in the workforce of their field of study, completing work experience, research papers, and case studies. Some of the general academic courses taken at NAIT are: Advanced Finance, International Business, Effective Writing, E-Commerce, and Financial Planning. Although there are not many general academic courses or electives, the student spends two full semesters completing work experience. Royal Roads University At the Royal Roads University, students have the option of several Bachelor of Commerce degrees; however, we choose to research the Bachelor of Commerce degree in Entrepreneurial Management. This degree offers no electives, only general courses; however, the general courses are broad with extensive information. There are only twelve courses a student must complete, and have three options in which they can complete the program. The first option is a twelve-month intensive program which is the equivalent to two years at a university, second option is a 24 month evening study program designed for the working professionals, and the last option is a 24 month online program with a two week residency period. Some of the courses taken at Royal Roads University include, Entrepreneurial Expertise, Strategies for Marketing, Information and Technology Management, Strategy, Corporate Finance, and an Entrepreneurial Project. Finally the student will complete a full business plan for a new product of service utilizing all the content in the program. Aston Business School Aston Business School is one of the well-known business schools in Europe. It is located in the city of Birmingham, England. Today it ranks amongst the largest of the leading business schools in Europe. Its management education, research and consultancy have been carefully fostered in partnership with industry, commerce and the public sector internationally. Aston Business School offers a wide variety of subject programs. Similar to BCIT, Aston Business School trained their students to be well prepared for their future employment. During the first two years, students work with case studies, group projects and taken part in a simulated business game, so students can be fully prepared for their future job. Students will be introduced to the key areas of business as well as carrying out project work that will help draw together the subjects they studied. During the final year, students have the opportunity to continue with a broad program of study following core modules encompassing business policy and strategic management. Students will also have the choice of working for their desired company as a part of their experience for completing their BA Below are some programs that Aston Business School offers: · Managerial and Administrative Studies · Business and Management · International Business and Management (new) · Economics and Management (new) Seattle, Albers School of Business and Economics The Albers School of Business offers a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a Major in Management. The first two years are mainly liberal arts courses which focus on broadening the student’s knowledge in not only business education but in literature, social sciences, theology, and calculus. All bachelor of administration degrees begin with these courses, while in the final two years, the student chooses a major of their choice. Finally the student will enrol in an internship and independent studies course, where the student gains first hand experience in the major chosen . Post Secondary Schools we did not include During our research, we found many post secondary schools from various universities, polytechnic schools, and technical institutions. Although we have included in our report many of the schools researched, below is a list of schools we did not include. -Indian Institute of Technology (India) -SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, CDN) -Prince Edward Island (CDN) -Okanagan University/College (CDN) -Columbia University (US) -Pace University (US) -Worcester Polytechnic Institute (US) -Rensselaer Polytechnic (US) -Northland Polytechnic (New Zealand) The Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad is a very successful institution with a very well known reputation. We wanted to include this institution in our report; however, it was very difficult to translate their programs offered and compare them to the BCIT degree. We found that at the Indian Institute of Management, the school of business only offered Master degrees and no Bachelor degrees. SAIT (Southern Institute of Technology), the sister school to NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), offered fewer degrees and didn’t offer any general business degrees. The only degree offered at SAIT that could be comparable to the BCIT Business degree was the Bachelor of Business Administration degree - Accounting. This degree focused solely on Accounting throughout the four years, with little to no general business courses or liberal arts courses. We did not include the University of Price Edward Island solely because it was very similar to Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. The course content and program structure were identical, and would have been repetitious to include. We decided to choose the schools geographically closer to BCIT because they are in direct competition rather than a university on the eastern borders of Canada. The Okanagan University College business administration degree is very similar to the degree offered at BCIT. We felt that it did not need extensive research only to state that the BCIT degree and the OUC degree are nearly identical. We wanted to include post secondary schools that offered different core courses and electives and had a different program structure so that we might provide recommendations. Columbia University, Pace University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic schools were not included do to their high tuition and many of the schools only offered master degrees. We found that one reason students who apply for BCIT do so because of their low tuition rates. Many of the post secondary schools in the United States were very expensive, and the tuition was calculated in US Dollars. The Northland Polytechnic School in New Zealand did not offer a bachelor of business degree that was even slightly comparable to the BCIT bachelor of business degree. It was very hard to translate their degree and compare it the BCIT degree. Criteria of Evaluation In our research of various universities, technical institutions and polytechnic schools, we have come across various bachelors of business administration degrees. Some of the evaluations of criteria that we looked at from the institutions were: the entrance requirements, length of study, GPA, core courses, electives, and more. See chart below. Distance Education Yes Recommendations During our research and interviewing the many faculty personnel at BCIT, we have derived four recommendations we feel the Faculty of Business at BCIT should consider. Some of which we gathered from comparing the BCIT BBA to other Institutions BBA, and from our interviews. We interviewed such people as the Associate Dean of Business, Chris Jaques; the program head for Integrated Management studies, Ike Hall; the Vice President of BCIT, Tony Tanner, the Program Head for Marketing Management, Barry Hogan; and Program Assistant, Deacon Devlin. Create a four year BBA with options after 2years A student would apply directly into a four year Bachelor of Business Administration degree. The first two years would be comprised of general studies courses, the same as the Integrated Management Studies program. The third year the student would take liberal arts courses along with some general courses from the option chosen. Note the option would be chosen after the second year. The final year would consist of liberal arts courses, with a directed studies or co-op program. The student would work directly in the workforce of the option chosen. Create a four year BBA with option of Diploma This recommendation was derived on the basis if a student cannot finish the four years of the Bachelor of Business Administration; the student would still receive a diploma in Integrated Management Studies. Note, this recommendation only works if the student has completed the first two years of the BBA. If at a later date, the student wishes to finish their degree, they would have seven years (from time they started the BBA) to complete the degree. Create a four year BBA only within departments Instead of have a Bachelor of Business Degree with options after the second year, the business department would have their own BBA. For example, the Accounting - Bachelor of Technology is solely offered within the department of Accounting. A student needs the Accounting diploma in order to apply for this BBA. In essence, each department would have their own Bachelor of Technology. Summary During this report, we came across many constraints and problems. The team started off slow, unsure as to what schools to research, in what areas, and what criteria to evaluate the schools. Finally, we were able to speak with Bonnie Milne, our faculty advisor, and create a timeline, project plan, and agenda for each day we were to meet. The main constraint we came across was not being able to speak with our client as often as we would have liked, as well as time constraints. The report was completed in a little less than one month, giving us little time to research and come together with a report that would help our client make any necessary changes to the BBA program. We wanted to include in our report, post secondary institutions from across Canada, the United States, and Europe. We found that the post secondary schools in Canada were similar to the BCIT BBA, however their liberal arts courses were taken in the first two years, and general studies courses taken in the last two years. The European degrees were very different to the BCIT degree. We could not compare the two degrees because the program structure, core courses, and electives were very different to the BCIT degree. We were able to overcome our constraints and problems with the report by interviewing key BCIT faculty responsible for the BBA, and creating an effective project plan which gave us a clear guide as to what the report should include, when we would have our meetings, how the report would be laid out, and who we should interview. Our recommendations were derived from the research of the various post secondary schools, from interviews and recommendations by the faculty. We found that the current BCIT degree need not many changes and some changes could not be made. Some changes that could not be made were to the core courses and electives, as they were originally set out by BCOU. APPENDIX A: Course Requirements for BCIT Detailed Program Matrix: 1.
