...ot camp and seemed to enjoy being there. Juan was placed in the home of a Sociologist and his wife. The sociologist was doing an experiment for his master’s degree. At this home he was expected to go to school and keep out of trouble, which didn’t happen. Juan started goofing off in school, got in fights, and stole his foster parents’ car to go see his girlfriend. All attempts to help Juan seem to fail. There are numerous obvious reasons for this though. Growing up with an absent father, and an addict prostitute mother is not the best start for a kid. He had to learn to take care of himself by whatever means. That means stealing, selling drugs, whatever it takes to get what he needed. He had no role models or people in his life to help him. His earliest childhood experiences led him to believe that it was okay to do whatever he wanted. This is an example of Strain and Social Learning theories. Juan probably had biological issues, since his mother is a drug addict. There’s no telling why Juan does the things he does, but this could be one very viable reason. When he was in the foster home of the Sociologist, it was obvious that no one wanted him there. How can he feel like he belonged?! He was sent to an all white middle class school, where he didn’t fit in, there would be obvious conflict there. His foster parents set standards higher than any normal kid for Juan. He was doomed for failure from the beginning. Everyone saw Juan as a troublemaker who will never change. Juan knew that, so why should he change?...
