Through assumptions, a women sitting beneath the willows are used in contrast to the city in the background. This painterly artwork reveals to us Monet’s brushstroke as nonlinear and very curvatous. Not only is the brushstroke very unique, but the colors that are used are just as important. Monet used colors which are very dull bright to contrast the city in the background as dull bluish, which suggests that this women is here as a retreat from the city life. It seems like she is holding a book on her hands while she reads in such a quiet environment. In contrast to Monet’s painting, Wyeths is much clearer. Wyeth’s handling is very precise and exact. No assumptions are made as to what the picture is or what is in the background. The grass is drawn in great detail as you can see the individual strands of grass. Unlike Monet, Wyeth clearly states that the woman is in the center of attention. The colors used in this picture contrast each other, like the woman’s pink clothing to the yellow grass to the grey background. The boundaries are defined through the horizon.
