Also in agreement with this conclusion are Carma Foulger of Gilbert, Arizona and Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Georgia. “Sunday is a family day. I don’t want the children to be trick-or-treating on Sunday,” Foulger said. “You just don’t do it [celebrate Halloween] on Sunday. That’s Christ’s day. You go to church on Sunday, you don’t go out and celebrate the devil. That’ll confuse a child,” agrees Hulsey. Both Hulsey and Foulger have already decided that their children will have their special day to dress up in costumes and collect candy on Saturday night. “We certainly don’t want to interfere with church services on Sunday night. We also want to make certain that all the teachers are comfortable that the children are going to be going to school the next day,” announced Mayor Bob Poydasheff of Columbus, Ohio. Some parents and teachers are also taking into consideration the fact that children will have to attend school the day directly following Halloween night. On the opposing side of this controversy, Police Crime Prevention spokeswoman Lindy Marino and Phoenix Police Detective Tony Marales are concerned about the safety of children who trick-or-treat on Saturday night. “We’ve always recognized Halloween as being on the 31st. We don’t recommend that people open their doors to strangers on the 30th,” declared Marino. Marino suggests that if people decide to give out candy on Saturday night, “they should lock their doors and sit outside in the driveway.” Tony Morales agrees that people should limit trick-or-treating to Sunday night for safety reasons. “We have extra officers on the street for visibility and to keep a lid on things, but Halloween is on the 31st.
