The Pope went on to qualify his remarks, which is the part of the announcement that is often ignored: "[any] theories of evolution which, in accordance with the philosophies inspiring them, consider the spirit as emerging from forces of matter or as a mere epiphenomenon of this matter, are incompatible with the truth about man." Doesn't sound like the RCC is endorsing godless evolution or naturalism.
