In the article Quindlen uses different supports to make her argument such as: statistics, and expert opinion. Statistics are used as a support throughout the article. Quindlen also givers her own expert opinion on how she views Americas problem with hunger among children. In this article Anna Quindlen uses statistics and expert opinion to argue that kids in America are not getting enough food and are going hungry. In the article, Quindlen uses some different types of evidence that she uses to support her argument. One type of evidence is that she uses are examples. This can be seen at the beginning of the article when Quindlen writes “ T shirts strained with Kool-aid and flip flops grey with street grit or backyard dust” (Newsweek p64).She also goes on to state “But that sort of summer has given way to something more difficult” These quotes are really important in a sense that they illustrate how summers are supposed to be, and how many people think they are but don’t realize that there is a problem. As these quotes are read, we can visualize what is being said, and connect more with what Quindlen is arguing. A second type of evidence that Quindlen uses when writing this article is the use of statistics. Quindlin writes “15 million students get free or cut rate lunches, but only 3 million are getting lunches through the federal summer lunch program” ( Newsweek p64).
