Grasmere
...s that my score of +10 was an average score, and we if we did this environmental survey in any other village which was not a honey pot site, then we would have most likely gained a score closer to +20. My map showing where I took the surveys and the results of these environmental surveys show that near the tourist shops, there seems to be a lower score. If we look at my land use map, there are less tourist shops where I did my first and second environmental surveys, compared to where I took my third one. The score of my first survey was +14, the second +13 and outside the tourist shops +1. This proves that tourism has had a negative effect on the environment in Grasmere. From my results table I can see that we did not find many people, near environmental survey points one and two, but on environmental survey point three, there was a score of -1. The reason for this is that is because most people who visit Grasmere are from the south of Grasmere as proved from my questionnaire map in hypothesis one. If most visitors are from the south, then they will be parking in the car park on Stock Lane, as this is the link from the M6. These people will then be walking up towards St. Oswald’s Church to see Wordsworth grave, thus, the reason I received a poor environmental quality score. As stated in my background theory, we expected to find overcrowding near certain places such as the centre of the village and also St. Oswald’s Church where Wordsworth is buried. We will find many tourists around these areas and will also find that they experience visitor – pressure. In the background theory, we suggested that Grasmere would have a large catchment area because it is a honey pot site. We thought that people would visit Grasmere because of the connections with Wordsworth and the quality of the landscape. We have found that people do travel a long distance to get to Grasmere, and we also discovered whilst in Grasmere, that Wordsworth was one of the main attractions in Grasmere. This was proved when we did our pedestrian counts. The closest point to St. Oswald’s Church, ...
