A Hero?
...ad never been so happy, when they were in their bedroom, gives “New Jack” the title of a hero already just for making a woman feel this way, making her feel like she is a queen of the Universe. It takes a real man to do it. Of course, when Jack first came from the war, he was a real stranger for Lauren. From one side she started to notice that if wasn’t really her husband, from another-- she wasn’t quite happy with returning of Jack, a person who never loved her and never treated her right. We can see her unhappiness about the appearing of Jack by the way she acted when she got that “wonderful news” Later on, Lauren just forgot about “Sommersby before the war“. She was just happy with what she had, and didn’t want to know the truth. It wasn’t important for her anymore. Even in the court, in front of the public, she said, that she didn’t care if it was a real husband or not. The only thing that did matter was to be with the loved man. Some people can say:” He can’t be a hero, because of his lie to everybody”. Again, my answer would be short and clear : is there anybody on the Earth who have never lied? We all lie at some point of our life, because we have to. Horace Townsend had his own reason to lie. With time he became sick of his life (the majority of people knows how it feels like). Everything seemed to be so boring and flat, any kind of a purpose to live just disappeared. The one person he was close to, Jack Sommersby, died. His best friend. And he continued Jack’s life. Horace brought him back to life, but killed Townsend inside himself. It was his way of escaping from the cage of purposeless life. But one thing newborn Jack couldn’t delete the heart of Horace. And wasn’t Superman lying about who he really was? He was taking the life of a superhero with a mask and a funky looking outfit on. And he was doing that just to change something in his life. Nobody notices that even our famous Mr. Superman is not even better than Horace Townsend. Yes, they did different kinds of things, but the fact of hiding their real personality is taking place in both situations. And telling everybody about him being Jack Sommersby is the only Horace’s fault. In everything else he was honest. Furthermore, we all act sometimes different with some people, we all sometimes try to hide real us from them. We all try to make people see us the way we want them to see us. That’s a human’s nature. Finally, what about Horace’s treating of black people? Did he punish them like everybody else did? No. In this case it only shows the best side of him. Townsend put a black man equal to a white one! That was a shock to everybody in that town. That was very nice of him to show everybody in his town how he treats Black people like. Especially on the meeting of the town, where Jack agreed to sell the his land to an African American family. Sommersby even could get injured or even killed for doing that, but he wouldn’t change his mind. This is what I call stepping outside the box, a real heroic decision. At least for that Horace definitely is a Hero. Moreover, Sommersby haven’t done anything bad to anybody, as the movie goes. It’s interesting, because we, human beings, usually hurt others, even when we don’t mean to. Except those three strangers, who recognized he wasn’t Jack Sommersby. But Horace was just protecting himself. That was the only time something bad...
