Hopeful is an adjective that describes the overall atmosphere of “The Enchanted Doll.” From the beginning of the story, when Dr. Amony entered Abe Sheftel’s store, it was evident that the hand-made doll symbolized hope through the “array of unappealing objects” such as cheap baseballs, cartons of cigarettes, bottles of ink, etc. With all the objects that Dr. Amony would never even consider giving his young niece, the doll gave him hope in finding the perfect gift.
