...here is a communication barrier between the slaves and Mr. Baldwin as well at the court. This barrier is that the slaves do not speak any English. For help with this problem Mr. Baldwin turns to Mr. Adams. Mr. Adams advice is to not tell Cinque’s (one of the slaves on trial) story in the short of where he is from but in the short of the “true story.” He is saying that to prove that facts, you have to look past the facts to see into someone to find their true life and personality. Although the movie is full of distress and anguish, towards the end the slaves gain strength thought the Bible. During one scene, one of the slave, whose name you are not told, has his pathway in the court blocked by a church member. The church member tells the slave that to place his hand on the Bible and he will pray for him. The slave instead shouted at the man, took the Bible, and walked into the church. Then later in the movie, the slave tells Cinque that he is beginning to understand to the Bible. This is an accomplishment because the slave neither speaks nor reads English. The one slave relates to Cinque the story of Jesus. Through that story, both these slaves and the rest of the slaves gain strength because they understand that if they do die, a nice place is waiting for them.
